Overhead cranes comes in different specs and types. If you are on the process of selecting one for your production company, here is a checklist that you can follow:

  1. Identify your material crane need


The first order of business is to know what would be the material that the crane would handle. It is important for you to know this as there are different types of overhead cranes that are manufactured specifically for certain type of materials (hot liquid, steel, light packages, etc.). Some manufacturers have special payload needs that requires a customized overhead crane. If this is the case, you might need to consult with a crane company if they can manufacture one for your needs.


  1. Know what type of beam you need


The beam, also known as the girder, is the large metal the spans at the end of the metal that forms the bridge of the crane.  It can go from single girder to double girder. Single girder can be handle up to 15 tons of weight but with less headroom. Double girder, on the other hand, can carry weight beyond 15 tons but with lots of headroom.


  1. Take into account the average weight or load


Speaking of the weight, you need to have a close estimate of capacity that your cranes GCC would pick and handle. This is an important detail that can be used not only for determining the girder that will be installed, but also the capacity of other crane elements like hook devices, etc.


  1. Determine the frequency and speed of pick up


The frequency is the number of times an overhead crane can pick a load per day. Some countries provide ratings for easier reference. Check your location whether they provide this kind of information.


In terms of the speed, you should be able to determine how fast can an overhead crane carry the load and go back to its original position for the next loading. This should be based on your operational schedule. By determining the speed, you will be able to decide if you will be going with a single to double speed control. If course, the faster the speed, the more costly it will be. But consider the time you will save versus the saving on crane cost.


  1. Are you going for electric, air, manual

Cranes come in different types depending on the power source. It can be manual, air powered, or electric-run. Of the three, manual overhead cranes are the cost-effective in terms of installation, but has certain limitations in terms of capacity.
